New article from Joyce Pang on environmentally sustainable consumption profiles
Congratulations to Joyce Pang on her new article, “Uncovering consumption profile heterogeneity and the role of income and education in determining profile membership in the Netherlands,” published in Discover Sustainability.
Written with SCOOP colleagues Paulina Pankowska, Félice van Nunspeet and Vincent Buskens, the article looks at consumption profiles in relation to sustainability. Consumption profiles are groupings determined by how people spend their money on food, transportation, clothing, energy, water, and travel. Joyce and her colleagues argue that income and education needs to be taken into account when looking at how people and households consume, and whether this consumption is sustainable. They suggest that to promote sustainable consumption, policy advisors need to consider how consumption in one domain can cause unintended shifts in another. For example, people tend towards compensatory behaviours, especially from higher socio-economic backgrounds: those who don't buy animal-based products may tend to do more flight-based travel.
