Leah Henderson on the importance of evidence in scientific research
SCOOP Fellow Leah Henderson has recently been featured by the University of Groningen in a news article about her expertise in societal trust.
Her research has focused on how scientific research is disseminated to the broader public and policymakers, and the extent to which people believe this information. She argues it's vitally important that scientific findings are not only based on evidence, but that we also need properly funded information channels so that disinformation is weakened.
As Leah says: ‘Nowadays you often hear: ‘’Science is just another opinion.’’ I completely disagree. Science is our best attempt to understand the world around us based on evidence. In essence, it is not so different from common sense, but scientific research is systematic and uses reliable methods. Especially in today’s world of alternative facts, it is important to maintain a grip on evidence-based science.’
